ESN Tartu Lapland Fairy Tale

Lapland is a unique destination to explore, especially in winter! It offers awesome adventures like dog-sledding and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoe-hiking, ice-fishing and ultimately lake-side sauna and an arctic swim - a tradition, that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Finland! You will get the chance to take a sleigh ride with the reindeer and meet the Santa Claus and his little helpers in their village! We cross the Arctic Circle and stay 4 days in authentic wilderness resort, where we can use the skis and snowshoes every day, and enjoy sauna on all evenings! At night we go hunting for the Northern Lights!

On this tour we will be staying in cabins, in shared rooms (2-10 beds). Most cabins will have basic cooking facilities (fridge, microwave, kitchen ware). The rooming lists will be made all together on first day of the tour.


We will be travelling with tourist bus, and our journey will contain 2 overnight rides. The bus has A/C, TV and WC; there are couple plug sockets; wifi is not available on the bus

Tour Program: Korvala

Day 1, Departure from Tartu
We meet at the departure point in Tartu. We get on the bus and head to Tallinn, where catch the evening ferry to Helsinki. Upon arrival be get on the bus again and drive up north during the night. On the way we get to know our travel mates, play games and watch some movies. We will also make regular stop for food.
Day 2, Korvala (B, D)
In the morning, we arrive in Lapland. We will spend the next days in Korvala - a small village and wilderness resort in Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle. Upon arrival, we enjoy breakfast all together and set up the schedule for the snowmobile and husky sadaris. Now it’s time to settle in and discover the surroundings! You can borrow the snow-shoes, cross-country skis, sledges and ice fishing kit. We will also have a short reindeer safari together. All that is included!
In the evening, we have a nice dinner together and later it’s time for sauna and arctic swim.
Day 3, Korvala (D)
After breakfast, it is again possible to try the ice-fishing, do cross-country skiing and snow-shoe hike.
The rest of the day will be filled with activities: dog-sleding, snowmobiling and reindeer safari. We get to meet the local Siberian Huskies, which are all beautiful pedigrees from the working sled-dog line. 
We have dinner together, and later we gather in kota tent to have a cosy evening with fire and some hot glögg. Keep your eyes open for the Northern lights! Sauna is available tonight as well!
Day 4, Korvala – Pyhä – Korvala (D)
Today we are going on a half-day trip to Pyhä (, where those who want can do mountain skiing or snowboarding. Alternative is to do some hiking – there are many beautiful hiking routes, our tour manager will help choose the suitable one and lead you for a hike.
We arrive back in Korvala in the afternoon. We enjoy the dinner together, and later it’s time for sauna! 
Day 5, Korvala-Rovaniemi –Helsinki
Morning is free for your last safaris, skiing, or snow-she walks. Around midday we depart to Rovaniemi. We meet Santa Claus in his village and take a photo all together. Later we have some free time in Rovaniemi. We recommend to visit famous Arktikum Museum to learn more about Arctic nature and Sami culture
In the evening, we depart towards Helsinki. We drive during the night.
Day 6, Helsinki-Tallinn-Tartu
We arrive in Helsinki early morning and catch a ferry to Tallinn. After disembarkation, we get on the bus and head home to Tartu, where we arrive early afternoon.

Optional Activities: Korvala

Optional Activities help you get the real taste of Lapland and make your trip fun and memorable! You can add the activities online in the booking system, as well as register on the spot. For some activities the number of places is limited, so we can only guarantee allotment for those who book the activities in advance.

Please note that Optional Activity are for extra cost. The payment is done on the spot, directly to the local organizers. You can pay in cash or by bank card. For some activities Scanbalt can ask small pre-payment in order to confirm your participation.

Activity takes place with minimum 10 participants. It is possible to cancel Optional Activities up to 14 days prior to departure. If you have booked the activity and decide not to participate when already in Lapland, you must still pay for your place, or find someone from the group who will do the activity instead of you.

Snowmobile safari
On these safaris you will learn how to drive a snowmobile in the Arctic wilderness. After initial instruction, participants travel in pairs through the forest, each taking turns to drive the snowmobile. The route can be challenging and the speed will vary according to the conditions. The time spent driving the snowmobile is approximately 1 hour in total and that time does not include breaks. The distance driven in that time depends on the weather conditions and the skills of the participants, and may be altered for safety reasons, or due to poor weather conditions.
Duration: approximately 1½ hours in total including instruction, 2 persons/snowmobile.
Husky safari
On these safaris you will see how much fun dog sledding is, either whilst riding in or driving a dog sled. We start by teaching the necessary driving skills and then set off with our huskies through the forest and over hills. The time spent on the trail is about half an hour and does not include breaks. Participants usually travel in pairs, each taking turns to drive and ride in the sled. The route can be challenging and the speed may vary according to weather conditions and the time of day, so the distance driven depends on these and the skills of the participants, and may be altered for safety reasons or due to poor weather conditions.
Duration: approximately 1 hour in total, including instruction.
Reindeer safari
On these safaris we ride in a sleigh pulled by the reindeer to our reindeer herding corral, where Poro-Hannu, a local reindeer herder, shows and explains how these beautiful animals of the north are cared for throughout the year. We make tea and coffee on a campfire and have time to chat with Poro-Hannu about his work. Distance covered approx. 4km, duration approx. 1-1½ hours.
Husky sled ride + Kennel visit
This activity includes a ride in a sled pulled by enthusiastic Siberian huskies driven by the guide, and a kennel tour where we learn about how these dogs live and work. This visit gives you a chance to hear about how a dog team works and is for people who want to learn more about the dogs, the history of the breed and the dog sledding sport.
Duration: approx 45 min in total, including a 2 km sled ride (ca 10 min) and a kennel visit.
Reindeer sled ride (included)
We learn about how these arctic animals live and work, by going for a sled ride, two or three at a time, while Poro-Hannu, the reindeer herder, guides us on our way.
Duration: approximately 1½ hours in total for the group.
