Magic Lapland New Year`s Adventure

 
On this 7 days Lapland winter  tour we go to Swedish & Finnish Lapland and make a short visit to Norway to check out the awesome scenery with the fjords and Atlantic Ocean. We visit the world famous Jukkasjärvi  Icehotel, do awesome activities like dog-sledding and snow mobiling, visit the sami people and meet the reindeer,  have a sauna with arctic swim and probably see some Northern Lights! We start and finish in Stockholm - the capital of Sweden. In Swedish Lapland we stay in Kiruna, Abisko National Park and in wilderness resort  near Rovaniemi - the capital of Finnish Lapland.

Detailed Program

Day 1, Stockholm
14:00 We will meet at the departure point where we will board the bus that takes us overnight to the far north. The majority of day 1 is a travel day. On the bus you have plenty of time to get to know your travel mates and watch some movies.
 
 
Day 2, Korvala - (B, L, D)
In the morning when you wake up, we have arrived to the camp in Finnish Lapland, North of the Arctic Circle! Get ready for a day full of activities. After breakfast it’s time to settle in and discover the surroundings. Here you can use free of charge the snow shoes, cross country skis, kick sledges and ice fishing kit. During lunch time a light meal is served. The surroundings here are beautiful, with deep forests and a frozen lake. In the evening enjoy a dinner with local specialties.  The evening ends with an ultimate sauna experience with a freezing arctic swim - a tradition that should not be missed, when in Finland!
 
 
Day 3 Korvala – Rovaniemi – Kiruna (B)
After a tasty breakfast it’s time to leave the camp with our first stop not far away. Welcome to Santa Claus's Village at Napapiiri where you will meet the man himself. Around midday we travel to Rovaniemi city where you will have more free time for an optional visit to famous Arktikum Museum where you can learn about Arctic nature and the Sami culture. Then we continue our journey to Kiruna in Sweden, where we stay two nights.
 
 
Day 4, Kiruna - Jukkasjärvi - Kiruna
The next day in Kiruna we will first drive to Jukkasjärvi, a small village with the famous Ice Hotel. Explore the rooms, try the beds and have a drink in a glass made of ice served in The Ice Bar, a once in a life time experience. After the visit you will go back to Kiruna and get to explore this interesting town.  Now it's time for optional dogsledding and snowmobiling or horse riding. If the date matches,  you have the option of doing a mine tour, this is the biggest underground mine in the world! Kiruna is an ever changing town due to the size of the mine, the whole town will one day be relocated to different areas due to the expansion of the mine.

*On NY tour, 31st of December, NY dinner is included to the tour pacakge.

 

Day 5 Kiruna – Narvik – Abisko
This morning we start traveling west, there's a good chance to spot elk, reindeer and other wild animals along the way. We visit the local Sami people, the indigenous people of Northern Scandinavia. You will learn first-hand the history and get an insight into the Sami way of life. You will get to meet their reindeer, while learning why this animal is so important to the Sami people. Then we continue through the Scandinavian mountain range with spectacular scenery of peaks, fjords and later the Atlantic Ocean arriving into Norway. Fancy a dip in the ocean anyone? The area around Narvik is not only stunningly beautiful but also holds a history related to WWII, when it was a battlefield. We then leave Norway behind and travel back to Sweden arriving in Abisko National Park where we stay the night. Abisko is known to be one of the few ultimate places in the world to observe the Aurora Borealis! Here we spend the evening at a traditional ami style teepee with an open fire and some hot wine, while waiting for an amazing Northern Light appearance.
 
 
Day 6 Abisko – Stockholm
In the morning, It's free time for optional activities in the Abisko area, arranged by the tourist organization. Alternatively take a hike in the area to enjoy the exceptional nature. In the afternoon we start our overnight journey back to Stockholm through Lapland. We will have dinner stop on the way.
 
 
Day 7 Stockholm
In the morning we arrive back to Stockholm, where we started. It's time to say goodbye to the many new friends you would have met during the Magic of Lapland tour.

The discount cannot be claimed after the booking and a valid membership card must be brought to the departure.
 
If the person cannot show a valid proof of membership etc he/she must pay the remaining amount of the price as soon as possible or have to leave the tour with no refund.

Optional Activitites

Lapland offers a lot of amazing activities. Some of them need to be booked in advance and some of them you can book with us and we forward your booking to the activity company. Some have guaranteed departure whilst others need a minimum number of persons. Possible cancellation of any of the two activities will be announced on day 1 of the tour.
 
 
Husky Safari 5 km (Drive your own sled!)
When: Day 2
Price: 70 EUR
Where: Korvala Wilderness Resort
Booking: You can book this activity on Scanbalt website. Pre-booking closes 14 days before departure. Booking on the spot may be available if places left.
Payment: 5 eur booking fee to Scanbalt / 65 EUR on the spot to organizer (payment by cash or card).
Duration: approximately 1 hour in total, including instruction, 2 persons/sled (driving ca 5 km, ca 30 minutes). The route may be altered for safety reasons or due to poor weather conditions. 
On this safari you will see how much fun dog sledding is, either whilst riding in or driving a dog sled. We start by teaching the necessary driving skills and then set off with our huskies through the forest and over hills. The time spent on the trail is about half an hour and does not include breaks. Participants usually travel in pairs, each taking turns to drive and ride in the sled. The route can be challenging and the speed may vary according to weather conditions and the time of day, so the distance driven depends on these and the skills of the participants, and may be altered for safety reasons or due to poor weather conditions.

 
Snowmobile Safari
When: Day 2

Payment: 5 eur booking fee to Scanbalt / 65 EUR on the spot to organizer (payment in cash or with card).
Required: driving licence
Duration: approximately 1½ hours in total including instruction, 2 persons/snowmobile. Before starting you will sign a paper for insurance. Signing that document means that you accept the conditions when damaging the snowmobile.

On this safari you will learn how to drive a snowmobile in the Arctic wilderness. After initial instruction, participants travel in pairs through the forest, each taking turns to drive the snowmobile. The route can be challenging and the speed will vary according to the conditions. The time spent driving the snowmobile is approximately 1 hour in total and that time does not include breaks. The distance driven in that time depends on the weather conditions and the skills of the participants, and may be altered for safety reasons, or due to poor weather conditions.
 
 
Combi Tour (Dog sledding + Snowmobile)

Where: Kiruna. You will be picked up at the hostel and go to an area outside the town.
Booking: You can book this activity via Scanbalt. Pre-booking closes 14 days before departure. Booking on the spot may be possible if places left.
Payment: 10 eur booking fee to Scanbalt / 800 SEK in cash on the spot to organizer.
Required: Before starting you will sign a paper for insurance. Signing that document means that you accept the conditions for using the snow mobile and taking part of the activity. For example if you damage a snowmobile you need to pay the "self risk" which could be about 8000 SEK.
Description:
Total duration of the activity is about 3 hours. You will get to do both dogsledding (4-6 persons sitting on the sled, sled is driven by the guide) and snowmobiling (2 persons on the snowmobile, taking turns) Warm clothes and  a warm drink is included.

 
Ice climbing

Where: Meet at the reception in Abisko. The activity takes place close to the hostel.
Payment: 6 eur booking fee to Scanbalt, 540 SEK on the spot to the organizer (payment by cash or card).
Number of places: Minimum 4 and maximum 6.
Description:
This 3-hour activity takes place a short walk from our hostel in Abisko national Park at about 10 AM on day 5. Ice climbing is considered to be one of the most exciting forms of climbing. On this half-day course you'll learn the basic techniques. By means of crampons, rope and ice axes we’ll climb the steep icefalls in the canyon. Climbing activity takes place only when there is enough natural frozen ice.
 
 
Try out Back-country skiing

When: Day 6, 10 AM-1 PM

Where: Meet at the reception in Abisko. The activity takes place next to the hostel.
Payment: 6 eur booking fee to Scanbalt, 540 SEK to the organizer on the spot (payment in cash or by card).
Number of places: Minimum 6 and maximum 16.
Description:
Learn to ski in the backcountry! Join us on a classic cross-country ski-tour for 3 hours. This tour is for you, who have never tried skiing before. We provide instructions and teach you the basics of cross-country skiing. This day is also a great way to enjoy Abisko National Park in an easygoing pace.

 
Daytrip to Norway
When: Day 5
Price: Free
Description:
Half-day bus trip to the along the magical views of Norwegian fjords and nature. We will make a stop in a small harbour town Narvik which is located at the Atlantic ocean and is well-known for its seabattles during WWII. The road from Abisko to Narvik takes us through some stunning scenery with snow covered peaks and fjords - we will make stops on the way. Because of hard weather conditions or during certain Holidays Norwegian authorities might close the road to Fjords.
*Note that the activity is possible only if the weather and the road conditions are good!
 
 
Please note that if you have signed up for an optional activity you have to take part of that activity or pay for it without participation. You can cancel the activity until 14 days before departure!

Visit to the Kiruna Iron Mine
Organizer: The Tourism Office of Kiruna
When: Certain days. Note that in our program the only possible time for you to go on a Mine Tour, is Day 4. So check online if the tour takes place on that day!
Where: Meeting is outside the tourism office, a special bus will take you down to the mine.
Booking/Price/Payment: Bookings are made online directly with the tourism office (if there are places left, you can try to book when we arrive to Kiruna, but it can happen that the tour is full). Price 360 sek/Adult; 260 SEK/Student
Description:
Come down underground to the world’s biggest underground iron-ore mine! A coach from the Tourist Office in Kiruna will take us straight into the mountain and down to the exhibition mine LKAB InfoMine, to the level of 540 meters. To secure a seat it’s good to book a tour in advance.
 
 
Artikum Museum in Rovaniemi
Arktikum provides information on Arctic issues and tells stories about Lapland. An Arktikum exhibition is an enormous information package of what's going on today in the evolving Arctic region. It will also educate you about Lappish history, culture and nature from Rovaniemi to the further reaches of Upper Lapland. Arktikum is your source of knowledge when travelling to the North.
