Hill of crosses Excursion a Day Trip from Riga

On this day trip we’ll cross the border to Lithuania to what the locals call “Kryžiø kalnas” more known as The Hill of Crosses. This is a site of pilgrimage just north of the city of Šiauliai and is one of the most unique places in the Baltics. The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former hill fort after the 1831 Uprising. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but an estimate was 100 000 in 2006.

Departure time: Monday & Thursday 3 PM, Tuesday and Friday 8:30 AM
The meeting point is at the Latvian Riflemen Monument at Strçlnieku Square close the Museum of Occupation of Latvia.

If you want to continue down to Vilnius and not go back to Riga the bus can drop you off in Siauliai from where you can continue with Public bus. 

Remember to bring a bottle of water, snacks, walking shoes, camera and a waterproof jacket.

Note that we are crossing the border to Lithuania so you need passport or other ID allowing entrance to Lithuania. Lithuania use Litas which is a different currency from the Latvian Lat.
